Interpreting is one of the most complex language processing tasks whose successful execution depends on a large number of variables. For optimal performance at the highest possible level of quality all these variables need to be in place and harmoniously working together. The complexity of the task dictates choices in terms of research questions and methodological approaches. Our traditional emphasis on quality performance and professional service has informed our research agenda:

  • Interpreters’ working conditions and their influence on performance in various professional scenarios
  • Skill acquisition and the development and maintenance of expertise
  • Cognitive foundations of a complex skill
  • Ethics and the profession
  • The use of new technologies in learning environments for interpreters and on the job
